The GWU this morning said Dom Mintoff deserved to be called Father of the Nation because he was the one who put Malta on the world map and pulled the workers out of misery.
In a statement, the union saluted the former prime minister, saying he had been the one who taught the workers how to fight for their rights. He had also brought about reforms which the people were enjoying to this day, including social benefits and free education and health services.
Under Mr Mintoff, Malta also freed itself from the chains of colonialism.
The GWU was statutorily linked to the Labour Party while Dom Mintoff was prime minister.
