The Nationalist Party said this evening that it was satisfied with the latest developments in the three-week old case sparked by the shooting by the driver of then Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, which developments came through the pressure of the Opposition.

However it said there were still doubts about whether the inquiry had revealed the whole truth, especially since no failure was found in the actions of the communications chief at the Office of the Prime Minister, Kurt Farrugia.

The board of inquiry had also not questioned the prime minister and his chief of staff Keith Schembri, and the documents related to the inquiry had not been published.

Neither had the truth emerged on the phone calls with the prime minister on the night of the incident (Nov 19).

The PN said the prime minister had seen the country through three agonising weeks before taking the decision he should have taken on day one.

The decision to remove Dr Mallia had come about thanks to the pressure of the Opposition and the independent media.

Were it truly up to Dr Muscat, Dr Mallia would still be the minister running the police force. Dr Muscat had defended his former minister for three weeks before the situation ran out of his control.

The people could now decide  whether the prime minister was able to shoulder the responsibilities of his office. It was clear that the prime minister’s credibility had taken a severe knock and the people were doubting his statements, the PN said.
