The Justice Ministry confirmed this evening that the minister, Owen Bonnici, was involved in a traffic accident in which a person was injured.

The accident happened on Thursday at 9pm. The minister was driving his private car.

The ministry explained that Dr Bonnici was driving uphill on the bend just outside the Sta Venera tunnels when he crashed into a car which was stationary in a dangerous spot.  The owner of the car was outside the vehicle with another person. With the force of impact their car was pushed forward, hitting the two. The owner suffered a fractured knee and was hospitalised for two days.

The ministry said the minister and the owner recognised that this was an unfortunate accident. They do not intend to take action against each other and will resolve the issue outside court.

The ministry said that as in all other cases, the minister would be following the usual course of a traffic sitting instituted by the police.
