Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said today he had renounced his right to receive €7,000 from a man who was found guilty of libelling him.

The case dates back to December 9, 2015 when the man, Lawrence Grech, from Vittoriosa, vented his frustration through a strongly-worded Facebook post, peppered with foul language, where he blamed Mr Mizzi for the never-ending roadworks.

He also accused the minister of being corrupt and hating the people of Vittoriosa. Mr Grech was irked by the fact that a team of 12 men was assigned to work round the clock on the adjacent road so as to complete the necessary resurfacing in minimal time in light of the Queen's visit.

Two days later, the minister instituted a case for libel against Mr Grech, claiming that the post was defamatory in his regard.

Mr Grech was yesterday ordered to pay €7,000 by way of damages to the minister declaring that it "strongly condemned such behaviour".

In a statement this afternoon, the minister said that Mr Grech had made an unconditional apology and admitted that what he wrote was baseless. He thanked the minister for accepting the apology.

Mr Grech also thanked the Prime Minister for intervening to find a solution, according to a government statement.
