Transport Minister Austin Gatt yesterday wrote to the Police Commissioner asking him to investigate corruption allegations made by Labour spokesman Joe Mizzi in relation to the transport authority.

Mr Mizzi alleged in Parliament last week that some number plates of scrapped cars were not being destroyed but illegally sold for re-use by certain people at the Malta Transport Authority (ADT).

The opposition spokesman submitted a list of number plates that were supposedly scrapped but were seen in circulation.

A driver had even received a summons for a traffic illegality on a car he had scrapped long before, Mr Mizzi added, pointing out he had first raised the case more than a year ago.

Mr Mizzi also spoke of corruption in the issuing of driving licences. He alleged that some people pretending to have lost their car licence were issued with a new one that allowed them to drive different vehicles, even though they would not have undertaken the relative tests.

The perpetrators of this racket were pocketing about €466 for each re-touched driving licence, he alleged.

Dr Gatt yesterday attached a transcript of Mr Mizzi's parliamentary speech to the letter he sent the Police Commissioner. He asked the police to investigate the allegations and offered his ministry's and the ADT's full cooperation.
