The Finance Minister has requested a conclusive and detailed report on what led to the power cut across the Maltese islands yesterday by Monday.
In separate letters to the chairman and chief executive officer of Enemalta corporation, the minister said the power failure was worrying and raised a number of questions on the fragility of the system.
Minister Tonio Fenech asked for the incident to be investigated in detail and for every mistake which could have been made to be indicated, together with corrective measures which were being recommended.
The minister made it clear that if the report remained inconclusive, he would appoint an independent technical committee to carry out the investigation and get to its own conclusions and recommendations.
The minister also asked the chairman to set up an adhoc strategic committee to be formed by a core group of Enemalta engineers, together with other experts, if necessary, to evaluate a plan for generation capacity at the Delimara and Marsa power stations so that such incidents could be avoided.
This exercise was not linked to the long term strategic plan but should look at immediate needs until the country had a bigger capacity within two years as a result of the Delimara power station extension.
The minister asked for this report to be concluded by the end of the month.
