The European Union is allocating €100 million for agriculture in Malta for the period 2007 to 2013 and applications for assistance may be submitted by farmers in October, Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino said.

He told a news conference that the funds could be used for various purposes, including the modernisation of structures to EU standards (€13.5 million), investments in quality products (€7 million), for the restoration of rubble walls (€5 million), agro-tourism (€12 million) and the marketing and processing of products (€7 million).

The minister was speaking at Meridiana wine estates in Ta’ Qali which between 2004 and 2006 benefitted from €22,000, amounting to 50 per cent of its capital expenses on tanks, a water recycling plant, and a pilot project for photovoltaics.
