Roma 0 AC Milan 0

Milan dominated but had to settle for a point at the Stadio Olimpico tonight.

In a battle of two teams who still have scudetto aspirations, the Rossoneri had numerous opportunities to break the deadlock but failed to take any of them.

The result left Milan in second place - three points behind Serie A leaders and city rivals Inter, who will take on Genoa tomorrow with a chance to extend their gap at the summit to six points.

Roma remained third, two points behind Milan.

The visitors went into the game on the back of four straight wins in the league and hoping to keep the momentum going ahead of next week's Champions League clash at Manchester United.

The absence of Milan's top scorer Alexandre Pato because of injury hindered Leonardo's side, however.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar earned a starting place instead and England midfielder David Beckham was dropped to the bench.

The hosts had a bright start and should have taken the lead but Daniele De Rossi's right-footed strike from the edge of the area went just wide of the far post.

Shortly after, Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati was at full stretch to keep out Julio Baptista's 30-yard bullet.

Milan's first chance came on 15 minutes when Marco Borriello's header from Daniele Bonera's cross from the right went wide.

Midway through the first half, Luca Antonini's right-footed strike went over the bar as Milan began to gain control of possession.

Shortly after, Mathieu Flamini sent in dangerous cross towards the far post but no one was there to knock it in.

On the half-hour mark, Milan wasted another chance with Huntelaar unable to make the most of Andrea Pirlo's cross at the near post.

In the 37th minute, Roma's Mirko Vucinic found Baptista and his left-footed shot went wide of the far post.

Before half-time, Antonini set up an unmarked Flamini and he fired high from a good position in what was the last chance of the first period.

Milan picked up where they left off after the restart and should have gone ahead in the 49th minute.

Massimo Ambrosini fed Flamini and his right-footed strike from inside the six-yard box went over the bar.

Borriello then had an opportunity to put the visitors ahead a minute later.

The Italy international surged into the area and struck the ball towards the near post only for his effort to be repelled by Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio.

In the 55th minute, Ambrosini's close-range header from Flamini's cross went over the bar.

Roma coach Claudio Ranieri made his first substitution on the hour mark, with Luca Toni replacing Baptista.

The Italy striker returned for his first appearance since January, when he was sidelined because of injury.

In the 70th minute, Huntelaar's angled effort from 20 yards was saved by Abbiati.

Shortly after, Beckham replaced the injured Flamini.

For all their dominance, Milan almost went behind in the 75th minute as Vucinic met John Arne Riise's cross from the right and nodded inches wide of the far post.

Soon after, Thiago Silva made a crucial tackle as Toni prepared to pull the trigger in the six-yard box.

With eight minutes remaining, Beckham's cross found Ronaldinho inside the area and the Brazilian's header went wide.

In the final minute, an unmarked Huntelaar should have scored the winner but headed wide from Beckham's cross with only Julio Sergio to beat.

At the other end, Abbiati made a great save to clear Riise's trademark fierce strike from distance.
