EU leaders have accepted to tie the 38-point immigration action plan to timeframes that have to be indicated by the European Commission, timesofmalta.com has learnt.

The Brussels summit in its second and last day is expected to come to a close in the afternoon and migration was discussed this morning.

Malta was insisting on timeframes for the implementation of the operational actions identified by the task force on immigration.

Sources said the heads of government accepted Malta's proposal and the onus will now fall on the European Commission to determine the time lines for implementation.

The leaders are also expected to agree on an "effective returns policy" that will facilitate the repatriation of failed asylum seekers to their country of origin, the sources said.
