Four illegal immigrants were given a two-year suspended jail term today after they admitted in court to having tried to leave Malta for Spain last Tuesday using false passports. The migrants, from Niger, Liberia, Burkino Faso and Ghana, were arrested at the airport.

Inspector Edel Mary Camilleri told the court that their sole intention was to leave the island for a better life. They did not realise the consequences of leaving the island using false passports and they had promised not to repeat their actions.

The court before passing judgment said it had considered their clean police record and their cooperation.

The jail term is suspended for four years.
