A group of 26 male illegal immigrants were rescued by an army patrol boat some 70 miles south of Malta yesterday morning.

The men - who said they were from Nigeria, Guinea and Egypt - were transferred from their small vessel to the patrol boat, which berthed at Haywharf later in the morning.

Police are investigating.
