The Government is considering setting up a jobs agency for migrants residing at the Marsa open centre in a bid to stop migrants loitering in the area requesting work.

Education and Employment Minister Evarist Bartolo said the proposal had been made by the migrants themselves and he found it to be interesting.

A suitable building is being sought to house the agency. The idea is for the migrants to gather there when they are seeking work. (See video above).

Mr Bartolo made his comment during a press conference with Social Dialogue Minister Helena Dalli about a report by the Commission against Racism and Intolerance of the Council of Europe.

Both ministers played down the claims made by this report that some migrants are being paid as little as 25 cents per day, adding that even NGOs had  dismissed such claims. However they acknowledged that some migrants are being offered substandard conditions.
