A number of irregular migrants held at the Safi Detention Centre were injured in a fight at around 3.30pm.

Eight were taken to Mater Dei hospital, one of them suffering from grievous injuries and 10 to the Floriana Health Centre. Five refused medical assistance. Three ambulances were on site.

First aid was given by the medical team of the Detention Services. A number of police cars were also on stand by.

The government said this evening the migrants argued over a number of minor issues which further escalated over the use of a of a hot plate.

Speedy intervention by Officers of the Detention Service soon brought the situation under control and prevented further escalation.

Members of the Police Rapid Intervention Unit were called to Safi Barracks as a precaution.
