Ismail Abubaker Garba has been jailed for eight months after he was convicted this morning of assaulting and biting a policeman.

The incident happened during a disturbance at Ta’ Kandja detention centre in March 2006.

He was convicted of biting PC Julian Grima in an arm and a leg. The policeman fell, hit his  head and was knocked unconscious.

The migrant was originally acquitted, with the court saying it was not convinced that the person involved was adequately identified.

However the Appeals Court upheld an appeal filed by the Attorney General.
