A Sudanese migrant was re-manded in custody yesterday after being charged with slightly injuring an officer when he allegedly pushed him to the ground in an escape attempt from Lyster Barracks.

The incident happened on Monday at about noon when Hussein Osman Abdulah, 29, allegedly tried to escape from the compound and pushed an officer who tried to stop him.

The officer suffered slight injuries in the fall.

In submissions on bail, legal aid lawyer Anthony Cutajar told the court his client should not be remanded in custody just because he was a foreigner.

However, Police Inspector Priscilla Caruana insisted that bail should be denied as the man was already being held in detention when he tried to escape.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera remanded Mr Osman in custody.
