Miguel Mifsud yesterday completed his move to Maltese champions Sliema Wanderers after he put pen to paper on a three-year contract.

The former Hibernians left-back, who turns 25 today, joined Sliema as a replacement for Carlo Mamo who quit the Blues to jump on Marsaxlokk's bandwagon.

Mamo's transfer has yet to be finalised as the two clubs are locked in a dispute over the compensation Marsaxlokk must pay Sliema for the former Malta international's services. The case has now been referred to the MFA Board for Arbitration.

Robert Arrigo, president of Sliema Wanderers, told The Times that Mifsud's registration documents following his move from Hibs were to be deposited at the Malta FA yesterday.

Darren Debono, 30, is also certain to join Sliema Wanderers now. The former Malta defender reached an accord with Valletta over his release and was due to sign a new contract, according to the parameters set by Sliema's bonus-wage payment policy, later yesterday or this morning.

"Following meetings with Valletta FC officials, we have come to a mutual agreement regarding my release from the club," Debono said.

"Sliema Wanderers have long expressed an interest in me... talks about the contract should be concluded soon."

While Debono will now concentrate his efforts on establishing himself in the Sliema team, Djibril Sylla's future with the champions is very much in the balance.

The lanky defender is serving a rolling ban by Sliema for disciplinary reasons but the MFA Players and Coaches Complaints Board last week ruled that the club must honour its contract with Sylla, who joined the Blues at the start of last season.

Sliema have now decided to put the former Gozo defender on the transfer list.
