Michael Mifsud has revealed that he's close to signing for a new club but dispelled persistent rumours that he's on the verge of making a return to Maltese football with Valletta.

"At present, I can only say that I'm considering offers from a host of overseas clubs," Mifsud told The Times yesterday.

"I expect to resolve my future in the next few days but I want to stress that there is no truth in reports that I am close to signing for Valletta. My aim is to continue my professional career abroad and there has been no shortage of interest from overseas clubs.

"At this stage of my career, I have no intention of returning to Maltese football."

The future of Mifsud, widely recognised as one of the best Maltese strikers ever, was always going to be the subject of close media scrutiny, given that the 28-year-old player is a free player after his contract with English Championship club Coventry City expired at the end of last season.

With the leagues in most European countries kicking off this month, Mifsud had been expected to make a decision on his future quite some time ago but this failed to materialise.

Amid rampant speculation that Valletta had stepped up their pursuit of Mifsud in recent weeks, rumour-mongers suggested yesterday that the striker was set to be unveiled as the latest City signing during last night's squad presentation activity at the Salinos Ground.

However, such reports have been strenuously denied by Mifsud.

On Wednesday night, Mifsud provided a timely reminder of his pace and scoring prowess when scoring two fine goals in Malta's 2-0 win over Georgia in a friendly match at the National Stadium.

The speedy forward is ready for a new challenge at club level after a somewhat unsettled season.

Mifsud almost joined Bristol City last summer but the deal fell through at the last hour.

He spent the first half of last season with Coventry but in January, he joined Barnsley on a short-term loan deal.
