PEMBROKE ATHLETA-0, SLIEMA WANDERERS-2

Michael Mifsud ended his scoring drought as he scored a brace to inspire Sliema Wanderers to a much-needed 2-0 win over Pembroke Athleta.

The Malta captain hit his goals in the second half after Pembroke, who were coming from a 4-0 win over St Andrew's, had produced the better opportunities in the first half.

Pembroke created the better chances in the first half but they were wasteful in front of goal.

Midway into the first half, Pembroke winger Leighton Grech supplied an excellent through-ball to Ariel Laudisi who sped into the box but his low cross was intercepted by Gary Muir.

Grech was then denied by Timothy Aquilina, Sliema's young goalkeeper who was prominent again when saving another dangerous effort from Laudisi who was clean through.

Sliema's task in the first half was compounded by two forced substitutions as defender Stefano Bianciardi picked up an injury to be replaced by John Mintoff after 17 minutes but the latter also limped off late in the first half. His place was taken by Rafael Ledesma.

It was Sliema who took the lead 12 minutes into the second half. Ledesma's excellent pass released Michael Mifsud who rifled home from inside the box.
Laudisi had a dangerous blocked by Alex Muscat, the Sliema captain, but with 16 minutes remaining, the Wanderers made the points safe.

Ledesma again released Mifsud with a great pass and the veteran striker drilled a low shot past Matthew Farrugia, the Pembroke goalkeeper.

Mifsud was named BOV player of the match.
