Malta International Airport has broken the six million passengers per year mark on the last day of 2017. 

The six million record means annual traffic through Malta's airport increased by almost one million over the past 12 months, making the year gone by the fastest-growing in the airport's history. 

MIA CEO Alan Borg thanked the airport's 3,000 staff members for helping it achieve a 17 per cent growth rate and noted that the airport had achieved the results which in the throes of a €12 million terminal reconfiguration project. 

Passenger 6,000,000 Manuela Fastner arrived in Malta on flight KM353 from Düsseldorf on Sunday and was given a small memento of Malta to mark the occasion. 

Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi, Malta Tourism Authority CEO Paul Bugeja and MTA marketing chief Carlo Micallef were also on hand to welcome Ms Fastner to Malta.
