Mġarr United have retained their Division Two status after a narrow 1-0 victory over Attard in a Promotion/Relegation play-off, played last weekend at the Centenary Stadium.

Attard created the best scoring opportunities in the early stages, Fabian Cutajar just missing the target with a free-kick. Mark Saliba then hit just wide and after 10 minutes, a mistake by Mġarr defender Chris Gauci presented Saliba with a clear opening but the latter's shot scraped the upright.

As the first half moved on, Mġarr improved. Midway through the opening period, Joe Grech's side were unlucky not to forge ahead as Carl Attard's pass reached Chris Abela whose shot on the turn cannoned off the crossbar. Soon after, Mġarr's Matthew Muscat missed another good scoring chance and six minutes before the break, the Attard goalkeeper brought off a fine save to deny Neil Busuttil.

Six minutes into the second half, Mġarr's Attard had a shot coming off the crossbar with Attard responding through attempts by James Anastasi and Cutajar that were saved by Kevin Ellul.

Gradually Mġarr began to dictate the run of play and on 64 minutes, they were unlucky when a dipper by Abela flashed against the upright. Abela was then denied by Formosa but the Attard keeper was beaten 16 minutes from time when a cross by Attard was finished off in style by Muscat.

Six minutes later, Mġarr went close to doubling their lead through James Borg.

Attard produced a late reaction but efforts by Josef Axisa and Cutajar were off target. Mġarr held on to their slim lead to keep their place in Division Two for the first time since they entered the MFA competitions.
