The Malta Financial Services Authority issued a direct order worth at least €950,000 to a company last September, Finance Minister Edward Scicluna said today.

That figure excludes VAT, accommodation, travel and other costs for the consultancy firm.

The firm was awarded the contract on the advice of MFSA chairman Joe Bannister, the minister said. Its job is to advise the MFSA on financial services policy issues concerning Malta's upcoming EU presidency stint.

The Finance Minister said the decision to award the direct order was based on the "particular credentials of the leading representative of this company."

Dr Scicluna shared details of the direct order this evening, in reply to a parliamentary question by Independent MP Marlene Farrugia.

In her question, Dr Farrugia had also asked the minister to confirm that the MFSA chairman had issued the direct order after consulting with the Prime Minister, as well as whether other companies had been in the running for the contract.
