Alfred Sant and Roberta Matsola have surged ahead of the other candidates in early vote-counting of the European elections.

Labour's Miriam Dalli, incumbents Merlene Mizzi and Joseph Cuschieri and Gozitan candidate Clint Camilleri are all doing well. The PN's David Casa is also doing well but it is unclear who is best placed for the third seat, if the PN wins it.

Observers said the destination of the sixth seat was still unknown. Although it was not possible for Alternattiva to win it, it could well be that the PL would retain it, denying the PN of its main election target. Much would depend on who inherited the votes of the small groups, observers said.

The PN's Net TV projected that Dr Sant could win some 53,000 votes. Dr Metsola is expected to win over 30,000.

The ballot papers started being turned face up at noon and placed in the pigeon holes of the various candidates.
