I refer to the report entitled Xemxija Residents Fight To Keep Their Unobstructed View (October 30). Kindly note the said article is factually misleading for at least two reasons.

First of all, the correspondent is incorrect in stating that the said Xemxija residents have an “unobstructed view”. As will be verified during the forthcoming onsite inspection, views from most of the buildings on the left-hand side of Triq is-Simar (where the objecting residents reside) had been obstructed since the 1970s by the buildings that stand on the right of the said street (which include the property on which a redevelopment is being proposed). So, really, there is no “unobstructed view” for the said residents to keep.

Secondly, the author of the article alleged that the chairman of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority “intervened several times during the meeting to ask people to remain calm after residents expressed anger”. This statement is also misleading and, contrary to the impression that has been conveyed, the atmosphere during the meeting was relatively calm with all interested parties putting their arguments across in civilised and exemplary manner.

Editor’s note: The report conveyed the residents’ objection to the development, which is that it would obstruct their view. The reporter stands by the statement that the chairman had to intervene to ask residents to remain calm.
