Mepa gave a company owned by the GRTU €700,000 between 2011 and 2012, Johann Buttigieg, CEO of Mepa, said in court this morning.

He was testifying in a case instituted by Green Dot Malta Ltd against Mepa where it is claiming that the authority allowed rival waste collection company GreenMT, owned by the GRTU, to operate illegally for six months. It is also claiming that Mepa handed money to GreenMT in what constituted illegal state aid.

Mr Buttigieg confirmed that cheques were issued by Mepa to GreenMT but he did not know why as verification was still in progress.

He did not know whether Green Dot received anything.

Mr Buttigieg explained that he was not CEO at the time.
