MEPA has approved an embellishment project which will involve the complete paving of Palace Square in Valletta. The square is currently paved with concrete tiles and used for parking.

The Sette Giugnio monument will be moved to the middle of the right side of the square and the lower part of the pedestal will be removed. Traffic will be banned.

The project also involves re-routing of traffic away from the square so that this will become a pedestrianised area.

The upper part of Old Theatre Street will also be paved with lava slabs in a herring bone layout.

The de Rohan fountains in one corner of the square will be retained, as will the trees and the existing paving around the Main Guard portico.

The project, which is expected to be taken in hand in the summer, will spell the end of some 100 parking spaces.

The square was used as a parade ground since the 19th century and was the site of many historic events including the uprising of June 7,1919 and the presentation of the George Cross in 1942.

RESTORATION OF CHAPEL APPROVED

MEPA this morning also approved an application for the restoration of St Anthony's Chapel, which is located close to the waste recycling plant in Marsascala. The area around the chapel is to be converted into a recreational park.
