Labour MEP Joseph Cuschieri in a question in the European Parliament has asked the European Parliament what progress has been made to remove obstacles such as the vehicle registration tax.

He recalled that the Commission itself had pointed to the registration tax as an obstacle for EU citizens in the exercise of their rights in a single market. It had promised to simplify the registration process among the member states.

Mr Cuschieri also argued that the Maltese government should set the example by eliminating this tax. This, he said, was an unfair tax which went against the spirit of the single market.

Removing this tax would be a logical follow-up to the removal of VAT on registration.
