An MEP delegation in Malta to examining the state of the rule of law on Thursday held meetings with representatives of the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit, Attorney General Peter Grech and Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar.

The delegation, which arrived in Malta on Thursday morning, also met former police inspector and FIAU employee Jonathan Ferris, representatives of Pilatus Bank and journalists.

It was also hoping to meet a representative of Nexia BT but the meeting had not been confirmed.

On Friday, the delegation will meet Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici and the members of the Malta Financial Services Authority.

The delegation also hopes to meet the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Keith Schembri and Chief Justice Silvio Camilleri. These two meetings, however, have not yet been confirmed.

At the end of the mission, the Chair of the delegation, Ana Gomes, will hold a press conference at the offices of the European Parliament in Valletta.

Once back in Brussels, a report containing the delegation’s findings will be drafted.

The MEPs was triggered by Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder on October 16, which provoked a debate on the rule of law on the island.

A 90-minute debate on the rule of law in Malta took place at the European Parliament, when members of the European Parliament voted in favour of a resolution asking the European Commission to initiate a dialogue with the Maltese government on the matter.
