Five men charged with breaking a policeman's arm and beating up another following the wedding of a relative were today granted bail against a personal guarantee of €3,000 and a deposit of €300.

The men – the groom's father Peter Camilleri, 56, his 21-year-old twin sons Jesrit Angel and Peter Paul, their cousin Carren Camilleri, 31, and their uncle Joseph Medina, 46, all of Żabbar, were granted bail after the last of a number of witnesses at the scene of the crime during the incident gave evidence.

The incident took place after the wedding reception at the St Anna reception hall in Marsascala on September 24.

Wedding guest Chris Scerri said one of the policemen went to intervene in an argument between two women, one of whom was drunk. One of the accused, Jesrit Angel warned the officer not to intervene telling him "don't get involved you complete idiot".

He tried to calm Jesrit Angel down, but, as he looked up, he saw Peter Paul beating up the second officer. Peter Paul's girlfriend, Jody Sciberras, was trying to pull her boyfriend off the police.

Policeman Jurgen Zerafa said he remembered being on the ground beaten up by the other men. Although they punched and kicked, he managed to catch a glimpse of their faces and so could identify them.

When the situation calmed down and he was able to get up after other family members got involved, he and his colleague Frans Formosa walked away but were hit from behind and they ended up on the floor.

PC Formosa broke his arm when he hit the floor.

Ms Sciberras, however, denied that the men hit the police. Because of her different version of events a confrontation between Mr Sciberras and Mr Scerri took place.

She stood by what she said and was declared a hostile witness.

The case continues.
