A 72-year-old man from Mellieha died this morning after he fell down a three-storey-high shaft used for a water pump at Marfa this morning.

Rescuers went on site after the man's wife, who was with him, raised the alarm. The man had reportedly gone down part of the narrow shaft to make repairs.

CPR was performed on the man while members of his family looked on. He was later pronounced dead by a doctor.

The incident happened at about 8.45am.

An inquiry is being held.
