A monument close to the Westreme Battery in the area known as Tunnara (Tunny Net) in Mellieħa was vandalised on Monday night, the Mellieħa council said as it condemned the act.

The Westreme Battery was restored by the council between 2007 and 2008, and has been transformed in the Tunnara Museum. Since then, the place was managed by a local Mellieħa NGO, Art Club 2000, which also played an important role in its restoration.

The council appeaed to anyone who may have information about the vandalism to contact the police.

"These vandals need to be stopped so that we can appreciate more the historical wealth left onto us by our forefathers and to give us a chance to pass it onto our next generation."

The council said it was committed to continue protecting and restoring such sites hin Mellieħa, and informative sessions are also being organised with the aim of raising more awareness.
