The current bedside media entertainment at Mater Dei Hospital will stop at the end of the year, communications company Melita has said.
In a statement the company announced it would stop providing the service after having notified the hospital last year.
Melita won a competitive bid in 2007 to provide entertainment, including television, internet and telephony services through bedside terminals.
However, the company said yesterday the equipment was at the end of its life and no longer supported by its vendors.

Melita informed the hospital’s management of its intention to terminate the service last year and was asked to extend the contract until the end of 2015.
The company said that it had put forward alternative solutions to provide telecommunications services, which would have included high-speed Wi-Fi internet throughout the hospital and television access using smart devices.
A spokesman for Mater Dei said it was working to provide high-quality infotainment to patients, the first stage of which would be to have WiFi throughout the hospital by the end of the year.
