Jesus Christ is to be portrayed on the big screens once again as Mel Gibson is working on a sequel to the biblical blockbuster The Passion of the Christ. The original was released in 2004.

The film depicts the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life, on the day of his crucifixion. The sequel will focus on the resurrection of Jesus.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Randall Wallace will join forces with Gibson on the follow-up.

“I always wanted to tell this story,” Wallace, a faith-based filmmaker said.

The Passion of The Christ earned €540 million in worldwide box office revenue.

The sequel is still in its early script-writing stage and has not determined financial backing as yet.

Movie fans have been pushing and eagerly expecting the sequel, according to Wallace.

“The evangelical community considers 'The Passion' the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger,” he added.
