Exclusive articles/programmes on Malta appearing on the print media, internet, television and radio last year generated more than €32 million in media value, the Malta Tourism Authority said.

"The exposure Malta receives in the international media is considered to be one of the main and essential fields in marketing the destination," it said when announcing the winners of the first edition of the MTA Malta International Press Awards. Sixty journalists participated in the awards.

This competition was launched by the MTA to honour journalists/photographers from all over the world whose work, published in 2009, contributed to the enhancement of tourism in the Maltese islands.

The magazine category was won by Marco Merola for the article L'ultimo Viaggio di San Paolo, on GEO Italy.

Nick Redmayne won the newspaper category with the article The Heart Beat Of Malta, which appeared on The Sunday Telegraph.

The award for photography reportage was won by Marco Ansaloni for photography accompanying the article Malta - Una Cupola Para La Historia carried by GEO Spain.

The Taste Of Life - Taste Of Malta, broadcast by RTL The Netherlands won Alex Van Delft the award for the television reportage category.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, the Environment and Culture, Mario de Marco and MTA chairman Louis Farrugia distributed the awards.
