McLaren has confirmed it is to build a Spider convertible version of its MP4-12C supercar and released a teaser image.

Placing an emphasis on noise, emotion and drama, McLaren also claims the 12C Spider will be "more usable than any car this exciting has a right to be".

The build-up to the car's full details being released has begun with a video featuring McLaren Formula 1 driver Jenson Button talking about driving fast without a roof, and what it means to him.

For now, all that has been officially announced is that the Spider will use the same 616bhp twin-turbo V8 engine as the coupe and the same carbon-fibre MonoCell chassis.

The company has, however, hinted that the Spider will top 186 mph (300 kph). The coupe reaches past the 200 mph mark, so a similar if slightly lower figure seems likely.
