The Mechanical Engineering Block at MCAST has been temporarily closed to ensure students' and staff safety.

MCAST said in a statement that following investigations to ensure the safety of students and staff, it was been professionally advised to add structural support to the upper floors of the mechanical engineering building before carrying out permanent repair works planned to start this summer.

The engineering block at the MCAST campus will be closed temporarily as a result of protective measures being taken to guarantee the building's safety while construction works are being conducted.

The works carried out so far have included the addition of a fourth floor to an older building to cater for an increasing number of students and to improve the existing facilities, which also include state of the art laboratories.

Work on these reinforcements have already started and shall be finished in the coming days, during which the affected students will be located to alternative premises.

Last March, MCAST students at the mechanical engineering workshops were evacuated from the building, in fear that it might collapse.

However, architects certified the building safe and students were back in their places by 10.30 a.m.
