The annual conference of the Malta Communications Authority to be held in January will celebrate the authority’s 10th anniversary with a look at the next 10 years.

“In 10 years time, according to the targets set by the European 2020 Strategy all Europeans will have access to internet speeds of above 30 Mbps, while 50 per cent or more of European households will subscribe to internet connections above 100 Mbps. But what will all this mean to the man in the street? What implications does it hold for industry players, for enterprises large and small, and how will it shape all our lives?” the authority said when announcing the conference.

On the 10th anniversary since its establishment, the Malta Communications Authority’s, 2011 Conference sets out to paint a picture of the future opportunities and challenges facing a society where enterprise and social interaction are characterised by a truly pervasive use of ICT.

The conference will ask and try to answer such questions as what can we expect to see on the market in the medium to longer term with next generation networks, cloud computing, social networking, e-health, e-education, and e-commerce impacting our day-to-day business and social lives; what role will regulation play in shaping the future of telecommunications; where will advancements in technology take us and how will consumer behaviour shape this industry; who will get the lion’s share of the value chain: the network operators, service providers, content providers and where will the balance lie; and whether the future of telecommunications lie in the quality of service or in new products and services.

Notwithstanding the global economic crisis and other challenges ahead, the future of ICT remains a truly exciting one, promising a world of previously undreamt opportunities. The race is on to exploit the benefits, while recognising and addressing the risks associated with this exciting revolution, the MCA said.

More details about the conference will be given in due course.
