Stephen Maguire had a golden chance of a 147 break in the penultimate frame of his 10-3 defeat of Anthony Hamilton on Thursday.

He potted 14 reds with blacks, but under-hit the 14th black as he tried to screw back to gain position on the 15th red, which was close to the baulk line. He still had a shot at the red into the green pocket, but missed his target.

Maguire would have become only the third player, after John Higgins and Ronnie O'Sullivan, to make 147s in back-to-back tournaments, having made one on his way to winning the recent China Open. He also missed out on a possible £157,000 jackpot.

Otherwise, the Scot would have been delighted with his performance and the result, having made short work of Hamilton.

Maguire, who lost to Higgins in the semis last year, did the damage by winning the first eight frames. He faces Neil Robertson in the second round at the Crucible.
