ST ANDREWS’ 1 MOSTA 3

Pre-match expectations were met as Mosta notched maximum spoils against St Andrew’s to consolidate their position in the upper part of the standings.

The Blues are now sixth on 24 points, two points behind Floriana. The match was a one-sided affair with Mosta creating a string of goal scoring opportunities in both halves with their victory maturing courtesy of second-half goals Donatus Okonkwo and Tyrone Farrugia after Manolito Micallef broke the deadlock in the opening half.

It was another uphill struggle for the Saints as the team has so far managed a meagre seven goals and conceded a staggering 40 in the process for an average of three goals suffered per encounter.

Mosta stormed into the lead on 17 minutes. Murga teased the St. Andrews’ rearguard with a menacing cross that Eloy Nkene failed to deal with and Micallef was on hand to fire home from close range.

The goal failed to lift the tempo though as the clock weighed down it seemed that Mosta were happy to go into the break 1-0 in front.

However, in the first six minutes of the second half, Mosta created two scoring chances, the last of which yielded a second goal. First, Hassan Yau’s shoot was too central to trouble Kris Calleja. But moments later, Okonkwo’s swerving free-kick evaded Calleja’s clutches before finishing into the top corner.

Then, on the hour mark, from corner, Zammit served Tyrone Farrugia who made no mistake from close range beating Calleja with a header – 3-0.

St. Andrew’s pulled one back 19 minutes from time, as he floated an inviting cross from free-kick towards the centre and Johnson leapt to head the ball beyond Omar Borg, the Mosta goalkeeper.
