The Marsa Cricket Club postponed its HSBC Winter League last weekend and instead held a 20-over game between two select sides for a match in honour of former captain Lal Wijesinghe who was here for a short visit.

Wijesinghe was Marsa captain between 1990 and 1994. In that period he made 6,098 runs with the bat and took 83 wickets with the ball.

On Saturday, he captained Marsa 'A'. Wijesinghe won the toss and elected to field on a wet pitch. Sarfraz Ali, captaining Marsa 'B', opened the batting with Alan Kyle. He was out in the third over, caught by his opposing captain.

Chris Naudi entered and soon departed being brilliantly bowled by Wijesinghe for four runs. Michael Caruana joined Kyle only to see himself caught by the substitute fielder at point.

Marsa 'B' were in big trouble when Ronnie Sacco strolled to the crease joining Caruana. The latter retired on 24 and later returned when Ernest Glynn was bowled. Caruana was also bowled in the last ball of the innings for 50 runs off 40 balls.

Sacco remained unbeaten on 38. Marsa 'B' totalled 124 runs all out.

Tariq was the most successful bowler for Marsa 'A', taking two wickets.

John Grima and Mark Sacco opened the batting for Marsa 'A'.

Sacco retired after 24 balls on 18 runs. Grima was bowled for 15. Tariq and Robert Krishna batted well making 31 and 22 runs respectively.

Wijesinghe was caught on eight runs and Wally Glynn was bowled for a duck. Sacco returned to the crease joining Desmond Don Paul, needing 16 runs to win with four overs to be faced.

With two overs to go Marsa 'A' only required ten runs but then Sacco was LBW only adding three more runs to his tally and Paul was left stranded on eight runs not out.

Marsa 'B' won the game by eight runs.
