Former European champions Olympique Marseille must end a title drought lasting 15 years, coach Eric Gerets said.

The eight-times French champions have not won anything since they lifted the European Cup in 1993.

They were stripped of the French title that year over a bribery scandal and have been going through lean times since, although they reached the UEFA Cup final in 2004.

Marseille hinted last season, however, that they were on their way back to the top by finishing third in Ligue 1 to earn a spot in the Champions League third qualifying round.

"We absolutely want to win trophies this season," Gerets said in an interview ahead of the Ligue 1 season that kicks off next Saturday.

A tough defender in his playing days, Gerets, who won 86 caps for Belgium, was equally successful as coach with spells at Club Bruges, PSV Eindhoven, Kaiserslautern and Galatasaray.

"I have won a lot of titles in my career but now I want to win some with Marseille," he said.

The season was already underway when Gerets took over in September last year, with the club lying 16th in the 20-strong championship with seven points from nine matches.

The atmosphere in the soccer-mad city was gloomy and jeers were often heard from the stands of the Velodrome stadium.

Under the Belgian's guidance, the club staged a remarkable recovery and the fans now feel Marseille could have been serious title contenders had Gerets joined earlier.

"The start of the season is crucial, especially at Marseille, where you're always under a great deal of pressure," Gerets said.

"When I arrived, my first job was to make sure all the fans were behind the team, which was not that obvious then.

"For this season, once my players have made clear that they will do their utmost to defend the club's colours, we'll have 60,000 fans behind us and that will help tremendously."

The goal for the former capital of French football will be to end the supremacy of Lyon, who have won the last seven Ligue 1 titles.

"On paper at least, we're good enough to give Lyon a hard time," said Gerets.
