The Marsaxlokk council announced today that it was reopening discussions with the police to again start towing trailers, boats and other encumbering objects such as skips left in front of garages, near the waterpolo pitch and other public spaces.

Warning notices would be stuck on the encumbering objects before they are towed.

Besides creating an inconvenience, these objects were also aggravating the parking problem, mayor Horace Gauci told a news conference this morning.

He noted that the council had issued a by-law to regulate these objects in 2014.

When the new council was elected in May last year, it entered discussions with the police to start towing them.

But in July, the council was contacted by the Justice Minister, who asked it to stop the enforcement as a long term solution was going to be found.

Eight months on, however, the council still does not know what the long term solution was.

Today’s press conference, the mayor said, was held for the council to inform residents that it had not ignored the issue.

He noted that some boat owners had proposed the development of a boat yard where they could park their trailers and boats and for which they were willing to pay rent.
