Last Saturday, the Rugby Overseas played a third game against the Marsa Cricket Club at the Marsa Sports Ground.

Their aim was to build on the previous week's performance where they only lost by a few runs.

They won the toss and elected to bowl, a wise choice when a team's batting line-up is stronger than its bowling sector.

The game could not have started better for them as Glenn Tavilla was caught brilliantly in the slips by Matt Birkwood off the bowling of Grant Williams from the second ball of the first over.

Sticking with the local rule of the batsmen retiring after 30 balls, Frank Spiteri (33 runs), Sam Dhandapani (30 runs), John Grima (34 runs) and Sarfraz Ali (20 runs) all retired with the Overseas bowlers only taking a further three wickets in the 30 overs.

Marsa totalled 210 runs. The main wicket taker was Grant Williams who took two.

The stage was set for the Overseas batsmen.

Birkwood and Williams opened the batting. Due to their eagerness to score the runs, Birkwood (seven runs) was caught when his square cut at Tavilla ran straight to Kevin Krishna and Williams (18 runs) was bowled by Ronnie Sacco after hitting the previous ball for an enormous six.

Tony Slater made 29 runs towards the end of the innings before he was the last man out hitting five fours.

Mike Smith (10), Sean Duffy (11), David Kent Watson (17) and Roy Newbold (12 not out) all made it to double figures but were not up to the challenge.

The Marsa bowlers were not as sharp as usual with Jim Towers bowling an incredible 18 wides in his three overs one of which was a maiden.

Marsa gave away 51 extras. The bowling honours went to young Sunny Krishna who took four wickets for 30 runs. His brother Sagar took two.

Marsa won the game comfortably by 47 runs.

This week's fixtures schedule at Marsa features two touring schools from England, Stockport Grammar School and King Edward and Queen Mary School.
