Gzira United 3
Attard 1

\n

This was Gzira United's third victory in the championship which meant sole leadership in the standings for the Maroons, two points ahead of Zebbug Rangers and St George's.

The first half was an exciting affair. On 18 minutes the Maroons took the lead through Matthew Cocks but Chris Ciappara put Attard back on level terms in the 25th minute.

Two minutes later, however, Gzira regained the lead with an excellent Lawrence Vella strike.

Attard surged forward in attack and got more wind in their sails five minutes from the break when Gzira defender Andre Buttigieg was red-carded for a foul on Ciappara.

However, in added time Gzira scored their third goal when former Attard striker Kevin Naudi tapped home a Marmara cross. Attard contested the goal, claiming Naudi was offside. The referee saw nothing untoward but dismissed Attard's Michael Farrugia for dissent.

Attard attacked for long stretches after the break but Gzira held tight to retain their two-goal advantage.

St Andrews 1
Vittoriosa Stars 0

A Claude Scerri goal was enough for St Andrews to win all points and hand Vittoriosa their first league upset of the season.

After just two minutes, Vittoriosa went close when a Robert Adami free-kick execution was well saved by Cini. Robert Guzman was unlucky then to see his shot hitting the Vittoriosa upright.

Four minutes into the second half the Saints obtained the winning goal when Scerri lobbed home following some fine Guzman work.

From then on it was Vittoriosa all the way. However, the team was rather ineffective in their conclusions and failed to avoid defeat.

Referee: Esther Farrugia.

Zurrieq 2
Xghajra Tornadoes 1

Louis Cutajar's Zurrieq notched their first points of the season after beating fellows-in-distress Xghajra.

Zurrieq displayed the better football during the first period but it was Xghajra who created the first scoring chances through Timothy Ellis and Damien D'Amato.

In the 21st minute, the Reds were denied by Carter, off a low Dino Bonnici shot. The Xghajra 'keeper was again in action soon after to hold out Philip Farrugia's drive.

In the 50th minute, Godfrey Chetcuti put Zurrieq ahead and a minute later Philip Farrugia made it 2-0.

Xghajra surged forward in attack but only grabbed a consolation goal, deep into stoppage time, when Wayne Nappa hit home a Paul Buttigieg pass.

Zebbug Rangers 2
Gozo FC 0

Zebbug produced a fine display as they obtained a deserved victory over the Gozitans, the latter falling to a second consecutive defeat. The Rangers are now joint runners-up with St George's.

Zebbug were the better team during the opening 45 minutes and early on went close through efforts by Elton Catania and Keith Farrugia which were saved by Xuereb.

In the 19th minute, a low David Micallef drive was saved by Xuereb but four minutes later Zebbug were awarded a penalty for a foul on David Micallef. Stefan Micallef's shot from the spot hit the bar, the same player scoring from the rebound.

The referee, at first, awarded the goal but then changed his decision after consulting his assistant.

A minute before the interval, Zebbug deservedly took the lead through an excellent Micallef volley.

The Gozitans reacted during the second period and early on went close through Silvan Galea and Matthew Portelli. They continued to press forward but in the 77th minute it was Zebbug's Keith Farrugia who scored the killer goal.

The seasiders had a good start and on 30 minutes Jason Attard scored from a Brian Grech corner.

Luqa's reaction was strong and deservedly equalised four minutes from the interval when Randolph Penza rammed home from close in.

Four minutes into the second half, Ta' Xbiex's Brian Grech saw his effort stopped by the woodwork and on 58 minutes Luqa were reduced to ten players when Penza was sent off for a second booking.

Referee: Malcolm Mercieca.

Mgarr United 0
Fgura United 5

This was Fgura's second consecutive victory. They are now in the runner-up spot along with Gharghur on the six-point mark.

At the start of the second period Fgura's Patrick Cilia hit the crossbar but in the 59th minute Carl Camilleri made it 3-0. Pace added a fourth and seven minutes from time Fgura sealed the issue with another goal from Elvin Gauci.

Referee: George Bitri.

Sta Lucija 2
Sirens 2

This was a just result with the Saints avoiding defeat in the nick of time after a late goal from substitute Claudio Formosa.

Play ensued mainly in midfield early on but in the 35th minute Ian Cutajar put Sta Lucija ahead.

The second period was balanced but Sirens looked heading to victory with two goals in the last ten minutes from Gordon Chetcuti and substitute Richard Agius.

However, in added time, Formosa saved the day for Sta Lucija with a timely goal.

Referee: Adrian Ferriggi.

Ghaxaq 0
Birzebbuga 4

Birzebbuga maintained a perfect record to go top of the standings, leaving Ghaxaq bottom without a point.

Birzebbuga broke the deadlock after just six minutes when Neville Farrugia headed in after Darren Prendergast's shot had bounced off the bar.

After 33 minutes, Prendergast doubled the southerners' lead.

Ghaxaq were reduced to 10 players in the 67th minute... they did not have enough men on the bench to effect a substitution after one of their players was injured.

Birzebbuga went on to score two more times, Larson Pace from a penalty, and Michael Ciappara two minutes from time.

Referee: Paul Apap.
