Former Sea Malta chairman and failed Labour MEP candidate Marlene Mizzi yesterday cast doubts on whether she would be putting her name on the Labour Party's ticket again next general election.

But Labour leader Joseph Muscat insisted the party wanted all its best elements on board and she was definitely "one of the best".

The issue arose in an interview with newspaper Illum published yesterday where she was asked to confirm that she would contest with Labour in 2013. Mrs Mizzi was quoted as saying no, leading sister newspaper MaltaToday on its website, quoting her as "denying" that she would contest.

"(But) all she said was that she could not confirm," Dr Muscat said yesterday, when asked how he felt about her comments.

Sources within the party have said that if Mrs Mizzi was elected she would be one of the main contenders for a Cabinet post.

"When the list of candidates is eventually announced, you will know," Dr Muscat added. Mrs Mizzi heads Labour's Business Forum. During the forum's launch, Dr Muscat had pointed out that Mrs Mizzi, who almost got elected at the EP elections, was the woman who got the highest number of votes in Malta's political history.

Attempts to contact Mrs Mizzi yesterday proved unsuccessful.
