Marine-Protected Areas are beneficial since their main aim is to safeguard marine ecosystems, habitats and species. The protection of such natural assets is crucial, such that the diversity and the health of the marine environment are retained. The creation of such areas is a tool to provide protection, call for sustainable use, and enable restoration, of marine natural wealth.

Indeed, the protection of important habitats comes along with various benefits. Considering, for instance, the protection of Posidonia oceanica (Common Name: Neptune Grass; Maltese name: Alka; a seagrass species endemic to the Mediterranean Sea) beds, this leads to other benefits, noting that such habitat serves as an important feeding and nursery ground for a variety of species. This implies that designating a marine protected area which supports such habitat ensures that stocks of important commercial fish species are replenished continuously. In addition, the protection of important species inhabiting the marine waters is essential so as to conserve the amazing diversity of animal and plant communities, noting their value, also for future generations.

Apart from the benefits afforded to ecosystems, habitats and species per se through the designation of Marine-Protected Areas, the latter are also crucial such that the marine environment can continue to provide mankind with its services and benefits. While affording protection to sensitive natural assets, it also contributes to increasing fisheries productivity and enhancing tourism, amongst others.
