Diego Maradona is to be the new coach of the Argentine national side, television and media reports said .

Todo Noticias, the country's respected and most-watched cable television station, and Clarin newspaper's website (www.clarin.com) said Maradona had been named to replace Alfio Basile, who quit on Oct. 16.

The news came as Maradona, who has had only two brief stints as a coach, was meeting with Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Julio Grondona in Buenos Aires.

The reports said Carlos Bilardo, coach of the 1986 World Cup-winning team that Maradona captained, would be part of the staff.
