A 41-year-old Sicilian man who has already served time in jail for harassing his former lover was today sentenced to another 40 months in prison after persisting with his behaviour.

Massimo Tivisini had already served 30 months over the same crime but his infatuation over his ex-girlfriend, Eleonora Camilleri, landed him in trouble again.

The Sicilian has been in and out of court since 2008 when the relationship with his partner hit the rocks.

Magistrate Charmaine Galea heard how the harassment and stalking began again in August last year, after he was released from jail. He began by sending the woman love letters but started following her when the letters remained unanswered.

Police Inspector Roderick Agius told the court how the woman would constantly find him wherever she went and how he would spend hours outside her home, sometimes throwing stones at the windows. Since Ms Camilleri is a nurse, Mr Tivisini would spend hours at Mater Dei Hospital following her footsteps.

Magistrate Galea said such persistent behaviour was unacceptable and ordered that he continued receiving psychological and psychiatric treatment during the 40-month jail term.

Lawyer Noel Cutajar appeared for the man.
