A Nigerian man who violently resisted the police who were called in to assist at the Ħal Far open centre was denied bail.

The police were called when the man refused to follow the instructions of a security officer.

Police Inspector Kevin Pulis told Magistrate Marseann Farrugia how a security officer called for help after 33-year-old Friday Ehhbih refused to accept an order not to enter the open centre to deliver a letter. The case happened at 7.30pm on Tuesday.

He said that when the police arrived, he attacked the two officers, smashing an officer’s wristwatch and slightly injuring them both.

His defence lawyer, Leontine Calleja, said the issue escalated because the man did not understand English or Maltese and could not understand what was going on.
