A young man turned up at a police station to report that he had held up a fast food outlet because he was kicked out of home by his parents and "wanted" to go to jail.

Taking the stand, Inspector Sandra Zammit told the court how Keith Camilleri, 27, stole a silver Toyota Hilux from Triq Il-Ħarifa in Qormi on Friday between 11.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.

She said the accused later drove to the Sphinx Pastizzeria in Triq Misraħ Il-Barrieri, Santa Venera, between 4 and 6 p.m. and held up a woman behind the counter with a knife and robbed her of €50.

Inspector Zammit explained that Mr Camilleri eventually turned up at the Qormi police station, where he reported his theft and explained that his mother and father had kicked him out of his house and he wanted to go to prison.

He was also charged with breaching his bail conditions and relapsing.

Mr Camilleri, who admitted to the charges, was imprisoned for three years by Magistrate Anthony Vella.
