A Bulgarian man wanted in Greece to face charges of wilful homicide yesterday agreed to his extradition to be able to defend himself in the trial.

Ivan Manolov, 50, was arrested in Mosta on Sunday on the strength of a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Greek authorities.

Police inspector Mario Cuschieri said the police received an alert on the Schengen Alert System, leading to the man’s arrest. He appeared before Magistrate Josette Demicoli and refused to be assisted by a lawyer, even if this was a legal aid lawyer provided by the State. He said he simply wanted to return to Greece to face justice there and defend himself in the best way possible.

The court, therefore, ordered his extradition and also ordered that he remains under arrest until extradited to Greece.

Deputy Attorney General Donatella Frendo Dimech and lawyer Vincienne Vella, from the Attorney General’s office, also prosecuted.
